**Recent Settlements and Judgments**Personal Injury: Auto/Auto - On February 22, 2008, Dr. Smith was driving towards her medical practice when she was hit by another driver who failed to yield the right of way at a stop sign. As a result, Dr. Smith suffered a meniscus tear in her knee. Fortunately, Dr. Smith recovered from her injuries with the assistance of physical therapy an steroid injections and without the need for surgery. Gross Amount Received = $50,000.00; Defense/Default Judgment - Mrs. Vela, a San Marcos small-business owner, called our law firm in desperation after a constable appeared at the door of her business, attempting to collect personal and business property (including trucks, trailers, and other equipment) to satisfy a $4.1 million judgment that had been entered against her in an Austin court. Mrs. Vela had never received notice of any lawsuit and had no understanding as to why a constable was preparing to seize her belongings, thus ruining her business and leaving her family in dire financial straights. Our attorneys acted quickly and, within a matter of weeks, together with the assistance of co-counsel, succeeded in convincing the Court to throw out the $4.1 million judgment against Mrs. Vela and to immediately stop the seizure. Personal Injury: Bicycle/Pedestrian - On February 18, 2009, a UT Student was walking to campus to take exams. She was legally crossing at a designated cross-walk when another student cyclist ran a red light and hit the UT Student, breaking her jaw and tearing her ACL. On behald of the injured student, we succesffuly pursued a claim under the homeowner's insurance coverage maintained by the cyclist's parents, with whom the cyclist maintained permanent residence while studying at UT. Gross Amount Received = $115,000.00; Collections/Sworn Accounts - A media printing company was owed over $36,000.00 for print work done for a large furniture retailer in Houston, TX. Instead of paying for the printing company's work, the furniture retailer elected to hide behind multiple defense attorneys instead of paying for the work performed. Our attorneys were brought in to take lead on the case and were successful in obtaining a summary judgment of over $45,000.00 in favor of the printing company. When the furniture retailer refused to pay the judgment, our attorneys had the local constable collect the full of amount of the judgment by force. Gross Amount Received = $47,000.00; Personal Injury: Closed Head Injury - Mr. Smith was driving to work when he was T-boned by another driver in a 10,000 pound Ford F-550 at approximately 50 miles per hour. The force of the impact destroyed Mr. Smith's vehicle, causing an 18 inch intrusion into the cab of his vehicle in the process. Mr. Smith was knocked unconscious and suffered a mild closed head injury as a result of the collision. Mr. Smith incurred medical expenses of approximately $11,420.69. On behalf of Mr. Smith, our attorneys prepared a detailed damages presentation and were able to settle the case without the need for litigation. Gross Amount Received = $300,000.00; Personal Injury: Auto/Auto - On May 3, 2008, Mr. Fairchild was riding as a passenger in the vehicle driven by Mr. Madeley. Mr. Madeley began texting/talking on his cell phone, disregarded a yield sign, failed to yield the right-of-way to another vehicle, and caused a collision. As a result of the collision, Mr. Fairchild received various severe injuries, including a right orbital blowout fracture. The insurance company for Mr. Madeley took advantage of the fact that Mr. Fairchild, a minor, was not represented by legal counsel and negotiated an early settlement for insufficient compensation. At the time, Mr. Fairchild had not even received medical treatment for all of his injuries as he had no health insurance. Our attorneys successfully threw out the insufficient settlement agreement, got Mr. Fairchild the medical care he needed (including oral surgery) and obtained a settlement of approximately 4 times the original amount offered by the insurance company. Our attorneys also negotiated Mr. Fairchild's medical bills down an average of 40%, thereby increasing his net recovery. Gross Amount Received = $117,042.00; Personal Injury/DWI - On October 9, 2008, Mr. Lira, Ms. Huerta and her 4 minor children were driving home from school and work when a drunk driver crossed the center lane of the highway on which they where travelling and hit their vehicle head-on. The force of the impact completely destroyed Ms. Huerta's vehicle and severly injured all of the passengers, many of which had to be air-lifted to the hospital. Our attorneys were able to settle the case for the responsible party's insurance policy limits of $300,000.00 within 4 months of the start of representation. On behalf of the clients, our attorneys negotiated approximately $200,000.00 in medical bills down to approximately $115,000.00, resulting in a direct benefit to the clients of an additional $85,000.00 in money saved. In addition, our attorneys are working to help the clients collect additional funds from the State's Crime Victim's Compensation Fund to assist them with future medical care and lost wages.
